Mochi: a new found Japanese sweet

A new sweet I've tried recently is mochi. It's Japanese ice cream in the shape of a ball. My BF's friend introduced it to him and he went out and bought some for me to try. You can get it in those Asian markets like Grand Mart and H-mart. It comes in vanilla and chocolate. I tried the vanilla and it was okay, but the chocolate flavor was so good. The outer layer is a stretchy substance, its kind of hard to explain. I would have never guessed that it was rice pounded down so much it turned into dough. It taste nothing like rice, but rather, a doughy marshmallow substance. The best part is when the chocolate ice cream inside begins to melt as you’re eating it, which softens the outer layer. If your ever stopping by a Asian market, I highly recommend mochi, its amazingly delicious!

Actually, the original mochi was filled with bean paste, if I'm not mistaken. You're just trying the ice cream variant, which I also happen to love. The original one I don't think is bad, either, but my family can't really stand it.

This stuff is good and addicting. Over the summer I would make weekly visits to Grand Mart JUST for the mochis. I usually had vanilla and strawberry flavored mochis. Who would have thought of upgrading the bean paste mochi to the ice cream mochi? :)

That does sound very interesting and I am always up for trying new things. You have made me very intrigued to see what this tastes like...especially since it's mashed up rice...

Yeah I love that stuff!
You can also buy them from Trader Joes. Its a store around here.
There are also other flavors such as strawberry, mango, and green tea. But of course, chocolate is my favorite flavor.
